Did Thomas Jefferson and the men who signed the Declaration of Independence ever forsee that the United States of America would allow the legal killing of an innocent child in a Mother's womb? What kind of a future does this country really have if we keep killing our own children?

Abraham Lincoln gave us his assessment of the Declaration's purpose, speaking of the framers of that document, he said: "This was their majestic interpretation of the economy of the Universe. This was their lofty, and wise, and noble understanding of the justice of the Creator to His creatures. Yes, gentlemen, to all his creatures, to the whole great family of man. In their enlightened belief, nothing stamped with the divine image and likeness was sent into the world to be trodden on. . . They grasped not only the whole race of man then living, but they reached forward and seized upon the farthest posterity. They erected a beacon to guide their children and their children's children, and the countless myriads who should inhabit the earth in other ages.

He warned also of the danger we would face if we closed our eyes to the value of life in any category of human beings: "I should like to know if taking this old Declaration of Independence, which declares that all men are equal upon principle and making exceptions to it where will it stop. If one man says it does not mean a Negro, why not another say it does not mean some other man?"

Our country is in very bad shape. Its laws protect severe immorality—the violation of human life. People will argue about whether a very young child in the womb is a human being, but what about a viable child at nine months who is already in the birth canal? If anyone can say that a child in the process of being born can be killed, then we are operating on totally different values. I question whether we as a nation can stay together, having on our national conscience the legal deaths of millions of children.
There is a strong bias in our country against speaking out for objective morality as there is for objective values. What could be more objective than the injustice of taking a human life? I was not only horrified but I was also heartbroken by the deaths of the people at the World Trade Center and know many families who suffered losses. No sane person takes any of this lightly. Like most New Yorkers, I have personally suffered with families and especially children who were scarred for life by the deathism. But we need to be reminded that in the United States every day thousands of children are deprived of life legally and with the connivance of many politicians.

Our country exports pornography, euthanasia, and abortion. Do you wonder why people hate us? And do you wonder that even nature itself begins to cry out? The people who died in the World Trade Center were innocent. They paid a price for a whole nation, perhaps for a whole civilization. Other people may very well die, though God forbid. The spectre of bioterrorism grips our country now, and it will not go away. If you have to die, for heaven’s sake die for what is good and holy. Die for what is a blessing to the world. Die for the honor and glory of God. Would you want to die in defense of what kills people and corrupts the young? Our nation has been given a call to repentance and conversion. Will the whole country or the whole civilization listen to it? Perhaps not. But I do believe in Jesus’ words: “He who will confess me before men, I will confess him before my Father in heaven.”

I realize there are people in favor of abortion out of some distorted goodwill. Many of them think they’re doing good and protecting human rights. I have often said to the pro-abortion demonstrators we meet in front of the clinics that we all have one thing in common—we think this is an important issue. I urge you to examine your conscience and ask yourself, is this a country that protects human life and protects the young?  I often heard Mother Teresa say something I thought was puzzling: “The greatest obstacle to world peace is abortion.” At first I did not see the connection. Then I realized that Muslims are generally very opposed to abortion, which they see as a violation of the commandment, “Thou shalt not kill.” The Muslim nations consistently vote against making legal abortion a requirement for membership in the U.N. It was only as I watched in horror the imploding of the World Trade Center that I realized what Mother Teresa, a prophetess of our time, had really meant. Mother Teresa

The child is also the sign and promise of human liberty, because he is a new act of freedom added to the world. The increase of marital introversion through the prevention of buds on the tree of life goes hand in hand with the increase of totalitarianism and suffocation of personal liberty. The furnace of Dachau was only one of the scientific ways modern man has found to snuff out the candles of freedom. There are other ways, too, all performed to "benefit" humanity. Herod said: "Go, and enquire carefully for the child, and when you have found him, bring me back word, so that I, too, may come and worship him" (Matt. 2.8). But the gift he gave was the sword meant to bleed infant freedom white.  The frontiers of freedom today are not on the political and economic front, but in the home. Not they who prattle about freedom, but they who create new areas of freedom through birth, are the true defenders of real democracy. Children are conceived despite the exact calculations of man. Their sex cannot be absolutely determined, nor the exact time of their coming. There is something beautifully undetermined, something free about their advent. Like the love from which they issued, they are as free at creation as a poem. All things else are slavery compared to this new act of freedom and the promise of a better world. It is, indeed, curious that those who would shirk the responsibility of life defend their egotism, on the ground that they want to be "free". If freedom is egotism, the plea is justified. Freedom belongs to pioneers who bring new choices and revolutions and decisions into a weary and old world.
